REQUIREMENT

We were asked to find a remedy for an existing pumping station which was suffering regular breakdown due to high temperature process water being discharged into it. We needed to determine what was causing the breakdowns and joint degrading.

METHOD

• High quality stainless steel press fit stainless steel pipe (316L) were specified and installed.
• High temperature perfluro elastomer seals within the stainless steel fittings were used to prevent premature degradation.
• A suitable replacement high temperature pump was also installed due to the age of the existing installation.

RESULT

• Stainless steel press fit pipework is heat and chemical resistant. It does not require joining using glue or timely threading as with PVC and galvanised steel respectively. The press joins are made using a tool to ensure equal pressure around the joint and a consistent seal every time.
• Once the solution has been shown to be working effectively the client we will look to upgrade other pumping stations across the site.

FOCUS ON:

STAINLESS STEEL PIPE WORK

Stainless steel is perfect for this application as it does not readily corrode, rust or stain with water as ordinary steel does.

Stainless steel is rich in chromium which forms a passive film of chromium oxide that adheres very strongly to the surface of the steel. It is chemically stable under conditions that provide sufficient oxygen to the surface, protecting the underlying steel from corrosion.

Provided that oxidising conditions are maintained this layer is self-repairing if damaged.
