Project Type

Installation of larger diameter rising main at high level

Products Used

Medium density polyethylene (MDPE) pipework with electrofusion fittings

Onsite Duration

5 days

Location

Enfield

REQUIREMENT

An existing 32mm OD MDPE underground pumping main pipe for a large warehouse was to be replaced by a 63mm OD MDPE overground pipe. The route of the new pipework would be at high level and follow existing services. Following installation the existing pump set was to be recommissioned and serviced.

METHOD

After a comprehensive site survey by the Edincare projects team, a full specification and quotation was compiled for client approval. Following approval we supplied a site-specific Risk Assessment Method Statement to the client.

Edincare carried out all enabling works prior to installation. In total 180m of 63mm OD MDPE pipework was installed. The pipes were joined using electrofusion fittings to ensure reliability and longevity. Installation at over 5m above ground level was carried out by a team of Edincare engineers with working-at-height safety training using a mobile access platform.

RESULT

The replacement pipes have a lower friction coefficient resulting in higher discharge rates and a reduced load on the pumps, which will increase their longevity.

THE BENEFITS OF ELECTROFUSION FITTINGS

Electrofusion is a method of precisely joining medium-density polyethylene (MDPE) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes using built-in low voltage heating elements within the fitting to weld the joint.
The inner surface of the fitting and the outer surface of the pipe melt, which cools to produce a very homogenous, reliable and long-lasting joint. Installation is simple and computer control ensures consistent quality.
Pipes joined by electrofusion fittings are suitable for all applications from potable water to waste water.
